Research and maintaining of biodiversity in historical structures of agricultural landscape of Slovakia
Program: | Bilateral - other |
Project leader: | RNDr. Dobrovodská Marta, PhD. |
Annotation: | The historical structures of agricultural landscape (HSAL) represent mosaics of small-scale arable fields and permanent agricultural cultivations which were not affected by the process of agricultural collectivization. They have irreplaceable ecological, cultural and historical value. They are a result of a long term, mutual relationship between man and the landscape. As main sources of local biodiversity, they are linked mainly to balks, margins of cross fields tracks, original meadows and pastures and after collectivization abandoned grass-grown former arable fields. These areas are now becoming rare and thus highly valuable in the European space. Since these areas are not at present a subject of special protection, there’s a high risk that in the near future, due to abandonment and subsequent forest succession and urban pressure, their decline or even irreversible loss is probable. Our project aims to resolve this problem by carrying out a thorough inventory and typologization of HSAL on the territory of whole Slovakia, coupled with detailed interdisciplinary research (research of vegetation, animals, ecological conditions and human society) in 3 representative pilot areas (Svätý Jur town, Liptovská Teplička village Hriňová town) and implementation of an proposed Strategy for protection and management of HSAL in these territories as well. |

Program: | Bilateral - other |
Project leader: | RNDr. Barančok Peter, CSc. |
Annotation: | GLORIA, the "Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments", is an initiative towards an international research network to assess climate change impacts on mountain environments. A standardised sampling design, such as GLORIA\'s Multi-Summit approach described here, is required so that data from different mountain regions can be compared. The aim of the project “GLORIA Field campaign 2008” was to provide detailed and complex research on the established GLORIA summits and to compare the obtained data with the baseline data from the years 2000 and 2001, so to detect a possible change. The research was realised on the base of “GLORIA Field manual - Multi-summit approach” and “Guidelines for the GLORIA-Europe resurvey 2008 - Amendment to the GLORIA Field Manual, 4th version” Additionally, two new methodical approaches were realised. The first, “California method” is used for more detailed quantitative analysis and description of species composition on summit area sections. The second, “Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen oxides” was used for measuring of atmospheric nitrogen deposition during the recording period. The nitrogen dioxide passive diffusion tubes were used for this purpose. |

Multi-criteria approach of sustainable multifunctional use of highly vulnerable area determination
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | RNDr. Krnáčová Zdena, PhD. |
Annotation: | The principles of sustainable soil use are based on respecting the limiting factors, their rational use. Adhering to these principles of farming in highly vulnerable areas, such as WPZ (water protection zone) Žitný ostrov, is especially important. The aim of the project is to determine landscape-ecological potential, assign zones of optimal multifunctional use – protection and revitalisation of land and its elements, sustainable economic use and non-agricultural land use, cultural and social development of the countryside. As farming companies employing conventional methods of farming are the most significant large-scale polluters, we would like to approach the farming subjects in the given area with a questionnaire survey and find out their way of farming, benefits, disadvantages, current legislative restrictions, recommendations, etc. The assessment will be the gauging of the suitability of land use, processing of the results, and their implementation into regional antennas of the National Rural Network of the Slovak Republic, and other strategic documents. One of the aims of the project is to determine the landscape-ecological potential, differentiate the zones of optimal multifunctional use – protection and revitalisation of landscape and its elements, sustainable economic use and non-agricultural land use, cultural and social development of the countryside Another significant aim is to ascertain the current status quo in the form of a questionnaire survey of farming subjects. Its assessment is gauging the suitability of land use, processing of the results, and their implementation into regional antennas of the National Rural Network of the Slovak Republic, and other strategic documents. |

Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | RNDr. Barančok Peter, CSc. |
Annotation: | The Western Carpathians cover a significant part of Slovakia. The country is characterised by mountain and alpine areas with their typical landscape structure with various representation of forest and non-forest habitats. Natural and anthropogenic conditioned factors play a significant role in formation of the landscape character. The processes in the natural environment constantly influence landscape diversity and biodiversity, and nowadays, anthropogenic impacts are more and more significant. The project focuses on the assessment of landscape and biodiversity changes in selected areas affected by the effects of natural and anthropogenous stress factors in different time periods. Attention will be paid to the differentiation of landscape diversity and biodiversity changes that were caused by the natural development of the landscape, global factors impact, and the influence of man in the country. Anthropogenic impact will be assessed from the point of view of man`s historical activity in the country, the way and intensity of the land use, to the present-day impact affecting the overall status of the natural environment. |

Project leader: | RNDr. Krnáčová Zdena, PhD. |
Annotation: | The scientific aim of the project is the development and creation of new methods of evaluation of cultural, selected regulating and supporting services of ecosystems using quantification techniques, such as landscape supplies for demand in terms of development of sustainable forms of tourism. From a methodological point of view, we will use several methods, like the Spreadsheet-Type method (Burkhard et al., 2009, 2014, Mederly et al., 2019, Nuegarten et al., 2018, Maes, 2012b, 2013) as a basis and assess the degree of hemerobia and landscape-ecology importance of landscape cover according to authors Krnáčová, Barančok, Pavličková (2018), where we evaluate the biophysical characteristics of elements. This methodology allows to design a suitable and sensitive type of tourism. The project also includes a comparison of the historical use of the landscape with the current condition and the determination of the degree of changes in landscape diversity and biodiversity (Maes et al., 2015). |

The evaluation of cultural ecosystem services countries on a basis of landscape research for the ecological model of tourism development
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | RNDr. Krnáčová Zdena, PhD. |
Annotation: | Scientific objective of the project is the creation and application of new quantitative methods for assessing ecosystem services of cultural landscapes. Starting from the evaluation of landscape ecological significance (LES) elements LAND COVER by biodiversity, ecosystems aesthetic value (EAV), cultural-historical significance of cultural heritage (CHAS). The basis is the mapping of the actual state and characteristics of the elements of the current landscape cover (LAND COVER) of the urban environment of Bratislava, which we processed under the legend CORINE Land Cover Technical Quide - Addendum 2000 (Bossard, Feranec, Oťahl, 2000) on 3rd, 4th, and 5th hierarchical level. The representation of the landscape cover classes is processed in vector form, resulting from the synthesis of the thematic and relevant layers contained in the ZB GIS, supplemented by a licensed current installation derived from orthophotomaps from aeronautical imaging. 2015 (EUROSENSE, s.r.o.2015). These were complemented by a terrain research in 2014-2017, 2018. This year we processed 8 cadastres within the model territory of Bratislava. The aim is the proposal of diversified ecological forms and species of tourism (ECOTUR), which take into account the ecosystems benefits and the social value of the original habitats and cultural-historical objects. Part of the ECOTUR models will be the elaboration of measures and regulatives with possibility implementation in strategy documents. |

Ecological optimization of the utilization of landslide areas in selected parts of the flysch zone in regard to the traditional farming
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | RNDr. Barančoková Mária, PhD. |
Annotation: | The occurrence of landslides in the flysch zone of the Western Carpathians has conditioned the utilization of landscape from the beginning of the settlement. Places that have not been affected by the construction processeswere used according to the needs of the agricultural population. Each intervention had an impact on thedevelopment of coenosis thereby creating specific habitats with high variability. This was so not only because ofnatural specificities of individual localities, but also due to diversity of management habits and skills in dispersed settlements (called "kopanice"). Slope deformations represent geofactor, which significantly affects the quality of the environment. The project aims to develop a methodology of assessment of landslide areas in flysch environment and their use in traditional farming, the application of this methodology in selected areas and suggestions for ecological optimization of utilization. |

Diversity of agricultural landscape and its ecosystem services
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | Ing. Špulerová Jana, PhD. |
Annotation: | The project was focused on the evaluation of diversity of agricultural landscape and its ecosystem services in different types of representative landscapes of Slovakia. Attention was paid to extensively cultivated farmland and traditional agricultural landscapes, which are characterized by higher diversity of landscape pattern and by the presence of semi natural habitats that significantly contribute to the provision of ecological functions in thelandscape and provide multifunctional ecosystem services to society. The most important results of the project are contained in two publication: the article of Lieskovsky et al. (2015) devoted to changes in landscape diversity and abandonment, and a monograph dedicated to the traditional agricultural landscape (TAL) (Špulerová et al., 2017). The monograph present diversity of TAL in Slovakia as a type of agricultural landscape with high landscape diversity. The second part of the monograph points to the importance of the ecosystem services assessment and benefits of these diversified landscape structures that provide to society. Result shows, that TAL provide more ecosystem services by their diversified patterns. The study of Lieskovský et al. is highly cited (22 WOS citation) and was aimed to analyse the driving forces behind the accelerated abandonment of traditional agricultural landscapes. The study showed that abandonment occurs most intensively on steep slopes and on less fertile soils. The distance from settlements and the financial profit are the other drivers of abandonment.References:LIESKOVSKÝ, Juraj - BEZÁK, Peter - ŠPULEROVÁ, Jana - LIESKOVSKÝ, Tibor - KOLEDA, Peter - DOBROVODSKÁ, Marta - BÜRGI, Matthias - GIMMI, Urs. Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | Mgr. Kollár Jozef, PhD. |
Annotation: | The project is focused on the forest stands, which have formed as a result of land use changes in the chosen regions of Slovakia differed by natural conditions and way of former land use: in the Small Carpathians (after viniculture recession), in the Považský Inovec Mts. (by afforestation of pastures) and the region of Kysuce (by abandonment of arable land). Research has an interdisciplinary character. In phytocoenological-floristic part there will be given a detailed phytocoenological and floristic characteristics of the observed forests, which will serve as a data base for further work. An attention will be paid to the ecological and socio-economic evaluation of particular forest vegetation and the process of succession, which determine essentially state and future of individual stands. Soil part will be devoted to basic and some special soil characteristics, which will serve to evaluate impact of historical land use on the soil. Microbiological part is oriented to the characteristics of soil micromycetes. |

The ecological model of tourism development based on assessment of localization and realization assumptions of landscape with use of GIS tolls and quantitation methods
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | RNDr. Krnáčová Zdena, PhD. |
Annotation: | Tourism development is determined by many factors. Localizational assumptions of natural and anthropogenic sphere, i.e. cultural-historical assumptions, are the most significant factors which are an object of this project. Realization factors, which include tourism infrastructure, represent indispensable development factors. Together, they compose spatial functional-chorological landscape units which are usually related to microregion or region. Functional-chorological approach to assessment of tourism assumptions enables more apposite arrangement of territorial model of tourism. Thus, it creates complex view on system of relations between tourism and landscape, and is methodical base for creation of ecological models of tourism development. Ecological approach consists inselection and application of procedures aimed at assessment of assumptions for development but also in proposal of suitable forms and activities of tourism for selected naturally, culturally and historically valuablelandscape segments. |

Significance and ecosystem services of historical structures of agricultural landscapes
Program: | VEGA |
Project leader: | Ing. Špulerová Jana, PhD. |
Annotation: | Significance of natural, semi-natural and cultural ecosystems in agricultural landscape for biodiversity protection is multiplex. The unique islands of species-rich plant and animal communities are represented by historicalstructures of agricultural landscape (HSAL), that play an important role in water retention and the prevention of soil erosion – both important with respect to climatic changes. Many ecosystem services and function are provided by these ecosystems, which bring benefits for society. They have irreplaceable ecological, cultural andhistorical value.Due to deficient ecosystem valuation as well as scarce scientific data documenting significance and services of these habitats in agrarian landscape, decline or even irreversible loss of biodiversity linked to such specificbiotopes will be the result. The project is aimed to bring new quantitative and qualitative scientific knowledge, which can be applied in decision processes or for implementation of international convention |
